Adequate Sports Facilities Needed: Councillor

The construction of a covered athletic field by a private developer has the backing of McKellar Ward’s city councillor.

Brian Hamilton points out Thunder Bay needs turf facilities to maintain sports, and has visited the site on Burwood Road, near Golf Links, to make sure construction goes smoothly.

“In light of our current crisis, not only the pandemic, but the economic conditions that will follow, I think the community might be best served by supporting this development,” points out the councillor.

He adds success of this private development could mean postponement of the city’s indoor turf facility or making different plans.

“My objective was to ensure that we provide adequate capacity for turf sports in Thunder Bay. These developers look like they’re well on their way to providing that,” says Hamilton.

The McKellar rep adds he’d be quite happy if there was private assistance for the city’s plan.

“What we really need to be doing as a community, is looking for partners. So if there’s people in the private sector that want to be able to provide this capacity on behalf of us, or in partnership, or with our support,” says the McKellar rep.

Construction of the covered facility on Burwood Road, at this point, is expected to hold two fields, but that could expand.
