Update 4:30am: Highway 17 Completely Opened

UPDATE 4:30am, Thursday:

A section of the Trans Canada Highway between Shabaqua Corners and Ignace which had been closed much of the day has reopened.

It had been closed due to smoke from what was an out of control 50 hectare forest fire known as Thunder Bay 4 located about seven kilometres north of the junction of Highwy 11/17 at Shabaqua.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says their crews were attacking the blaze from the air all afternoon.

The highway reopened just prior 10 pm.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
