School Closure Extended To May 31st

Schools in Ontario will remain closed until May 31st.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement today, saying they will continue the Learn At Home program. He adds there will be new training for educators and parents on how to better support students.

Lecce says they are making sure the education system is responsible for students’ learning, not parents who may be working from home.

The Education Minister admits Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams and other officials “need more time” before schools can safely re-open.

“If there is a way to save some of the school year, the back end, then we will consider that based on the advice of the command table,” Lecce notes.

He says Ontario and governments across the world are exploring how students can return to school safely when classes are able to resume. He says they are keeping “every idea” in mind to keep students, staff, families and communities safe from spreading COVID-19.
