Elective surgeries at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre remain on hold but officials are looking at surgeries in other areas.
Dr. Stewart Kennedy, the hospital’s incident manager for COVID-19 indicates they are reviewing whether to increase the number of lower priority operations.
“These surgeries are like our cancer surgeries….that require a more timely intervention because there could be a possibility of a cancer or an abcess that we have to move forward,” notes Dr. Kennedy.
The hospital official stresses urgent priority surgeries are still taking place.
Meantime, Dr. Kennedy says to this point no medical staff have tested positive for the coronavirus.
He tells us that has become more apparent since newer effecient testing has been made available to them which can give them test results in a couple of hours, something they could not do a week ago.
