First COVID Case Reinforces Stopping The Spread: Mayor

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 has Mayor Bill Mauro emphasizing again we must all be mindful of not spreading the virus.

It is a man in his 60’s who had just returned from Florida and who is currently self-isolating at home with his wife who is a probable case and waiting for her results.

Mauro says his thoughts are with the individual and he hopes it will reinforce the message to the community that “Physical distancing is very important. It is really the only tool at our disposal to try and contain…(the) spread.”

The Thunder Bay mayor is also suggesting we were fortunate to get this far into the crisis without a confirmed case.

“I think we always understood our geographic isolation was going to probably give us a bit of lead time in terms of the arrival of the virus, but we also…understood that people who were travelling would have a higher risk of exposure.”

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
