Another sure sign of spring is the beginning of shipping season at the Port of Thunder Bay.
Harbour master Guy Jarvis tells for the first time on record, a loaded barge and tugboat combination arrived Thursday night.
“Carrying calcium chloride, which is a product used for dust suppression on gravel roads throughout northwestern Ontario,” notes Jarvis.
The harbour master adds everyone on board the ships are carrying out precautions to ensure there is no spread of COVID-19.
“We’re trying to minimize the interaction between sailors and shore people. We’re using more walkie-talkies, more electronic communications,” says the harbour master.
The ships came with 5,000 tonnes of Calcium Chloride, which came from Sarnia, and was unloaded overnight at a business on the Kam River.
