City Manager: Employees Will Return When It Is Safe

The fact the City had to send hundreds of their employees home for their own safety isn’t lost on the municipal corporation’s management.

City Manager Norm Gale understands the stress city employees are feeling.

“These are troubling times, it’s difficult for everybody, but it’s even more difficult when someone is told they have to stay home for their own safety. I appreciate and recognize the angst and anxiety that is coupled on top of the angst and anxiety that already exists because of the global emergency,” Gale said.

Gale made his comments to Acadia Broadcasting’s John Ongaro Thursday morning and said the decision was made for safety and not financial reasons.

“Everyone who has been told to stay home will return to their job when this is over or when it is safe. This is not an effort to reshape the corporation, this is not about money or cost savings, this is about worker and community safety,” Gale noted.

The City Manager says Thunder Bay has done pandemic planning in the past and that has helped them address the current situation the world is in.

However, as a person and not the city manager, Gale admits he is worried.

“I’m worried about what it looks like in eight months and two years. I don’t mind admitting that. I am no expert, I do have some background in this, it does help me a little bit as we go on, but there are experts surrounding us and there are experts giving us expert advice,” Gale said.
