Not A Soul In Rural America: Local Man

Brutal is how a Thunder Bay resident describes driving back from Arizona with his wife during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Keith Scott tells us other than the Interstate Highways being busy and gas stations open, there was nothing available.

“In terms of the commercial operation and retail in most communities, we would drive through small town rural America, and you drive down the main street at noon on Friday, or Wednesday afternoon, and there wasn’t a soul,” notes the local man.

He also recalls what was going through their mind heading to the Canadian border.

“We heard rumours they were going to aim a heat gun at your forehead to check your temperature, and you had to be able to hold your breath for 15 seconds without coughing at the end of that, but none of that was administered to us,” recalls the Thunder Bay man.

He adds they are now in self-isolation after crossing the border without problem at 3:30 in the morning.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
