The Little Silver Linings

This COVID-19 pandemic has us social distancing and self-isolating in order to flatten the curve and stave off this dirtbag, the coronavirus. Medically, financially, and in so many other ways, this is beyond awful. Right now I’m trying to think of some of the little silver linings amidst all of this. Not to minimize the seriousness of the situation, but just to think about some of the positive things happening around me.

With school being cancelled and my wife working from home, it’s been amazing to see how hard she works and how she balances that and keeping our 5-year-old boy active and engaged. It’s really eye-opening to what she does work-wise on a daily basis. It’s not for my eyes and ears so I’m banished to the basement during her conference calls, but I know she’s juggling a lot of stuff and working hard in these unprecedented circumstances. Either that, or she’s pretending to be on the phone to get a break from me. Nobody would blame her for that.

I’m enjoying spending more time with my son during the day, and trying to help him keep up with what he was learning in school. Although I already had the utmost respect for educators, trying to somewhat fill their shoes really drives home how important our teachers and school staff are, and how lucky we are to have them. Thank you all so much.

I’ve been really proud to see our community come together during all of this. Thunder Bay is an amazing place full of phenomenal people. To the people who provide essential services, who are out working hard for us, we appreciate you, thank you.

Although we’re not seeing people like we usually do, I’m communicating more with my crew than usual and it’s been really nice. A lot of us are lucky to have access to technology that lets us call, text, and video chat. I have several group chats going on that have been both a good platform for conversation about this situation, and a welcome distraction from it. Above all, it’s comforting to be able to talk to good friends and family during all of this.

Something that has meant a lot to myself and our entire team here at 99.9 The Bay, is the notes and calls from listeners we’ve received. A lot of you are reaching out to let us know that you appreciate the team keeping you informed, entertained, and keeping you company during all of this. Those messages mean more than you know. Thank you, it’s a privilege to be let into your homes, vehicles, or wherever you may listen, and if we can give you important information, lighten the load a little bit, and play some music to escape into, it’s a darn good day for us. Thank you, for being our partner in the good times and the challenging ones.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
