Students wanting to apply for over $115,000 in scholarships and bursaries through Thunder Bay’s Community Foundation can now do so on-line.
Executive Director Alexandra Calderon tells us going on-line has many advantages such as less paper involved, and accessibility issues students may have.
“They won’t be filtered by their high school. They won’t have to make multiple photocopies, or chase people for information. Whether you need a letter of recommendation, just a third party would sign in and complete that,” says the Executive Director.
She points out last year, before going on-line, they received over 200 applications, and this year she expects more, from anyone.
“You can have an A average, or just qualify for college or university. You can be going into engineering, or nursing, or para-medicine…. living on a working farm is one of the qualifications for one of our bursaries. Whether you’re going into the fine arts,” says Calderon.
The Foundation’s Student awards range from $1,300 to $7,500, some distributed over a number of years. Calderon adds the money is donated by city philanthropists who are very passionate about seeing students succeed.
“Last year, 32 students got awards. Through the on-line application we’re hoping to have more applications from the district, and reduce accessibility issues, and not having to print so much paper,” says the Executive Director.
The Community Foundation adds a number of lawyers and accountants working in Thunder Bay are past recipients.
