Students Help Make A Difference At Special Olympics

The Special Olympic Canada Winter Games in the city are not only good for the athletes but some school students in our city as well.

Grade five teacher Caitlin Guarasci explains students at St. Bernard school adopted four athletes from different parts of the country to cheer on.

“We didn’t preselect anyone so we just said ‘any way we can help out’.” They adopted two floor hockey players, a bowler, and an alpine skier.

Guarasci says part of the project late last year also involved making and selling Christmas cards and selling them. They managed to raise $2,000 in the process.

The St. Bernard teacher tells us during the process the students learned about making a difference in the community.

The students were at Delaney Arena, supporting the speed skating athletes, which is where ice dancing champion Scott Moir showed up, as well as Olympic champion Mark Tewksbury.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
