Report Alleges Charity Founder Abused Women

A group which helps people with intellectual disabilities says it’s “shocked” by a report which alleges its late founder sexually abused several women.

L’Arche International launched an independent inquiry against Jean Vanier just months before his death in 2019.

The inquiry received testimony from six adult women who alleged they were abused by Vanier between 1970 and 2005.

The report says Vanier initiated “manipulative sexual relationships” with the women, often combined with so-called “mystical and spiritual” justifications for the conduct.

It says there’s no indication Vanier had inappropriate relationships with people with intellectual disabilities.

In a statement, L’Arche International says it “unreservedly condemns” Vanier’s actions.
