Thunder Bay is now officially considered a tree city by the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation for the way we manage our trees..
City spokesperson Robert Scott explains it is considered a prestigious designation.
“This is pretty good for Thunder Bay and the world because it makes a recognizable framework for managing urban forests for all communities and it is definitely something we can all be proud of,” says Scott.
The city spokesperson points out there are nine so-called tree cities in Canada and 59 worldwide.
Scott says this is the first year of the program and we will be seeing more in the years go come. He says it “really does foster the discussion around urban forests but as well as green infrastructure as a whole.”
