Scrapyard Fire Brings In The MOE

A stubborn debris fire at a scrapyard by the lake sent a lot of smoke into the air, keeping Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue busy.

They tell us they were called to Dutchak’s Recycle on Hammond Street at around ten this morning, to find debris ablaze. Officials tell us the debris included “a tire and various other petroleum-based products that were combined within the… pile.”

The fire was reported to have begun after workers on site had been using an acetylene torch to cut metal debris outside in an area of the yard used for storing scrap metal.

The blaze was close by to Lake Superior so the Ministry of the Environment was called but and investigator felt there was no danger of pollution.

There are no injuries to report.
