The Canadian Cancer Society is getting ready for Relay for Life.
This year’s fundraising goal is $90,000 and organizers say without the money raised through this event they couldn’t continue to offer their local programs and services to cancer patients and their families.
The event takes place at the Legion Track on June 6th from 3:00 until 9:30 p.m.
Co-Chair of Relay for Life and cancer survivor Maria Lento tells us the money raised helps with everything from cancer research to transportation costs.
“We need this money. It’s a matter of life and death for a lot of people. Or a matter of extending your life, or a matter of living with cancer. It doesn’t mean we have to die anymore, a lot of people are living with cancer,” Lento says.
Lento explains that the event is always filled with many emotions.
“There’s a sense of community, there are tears, there’s laughter, there’s hope, there’s everything. There’s probably every emotion you can think of. And it doesn’t matter what stage you’re in, or if you’re there because someone passed away and you’re there to remember. It’s still a happy thing,” she added.
