Lead Levels To Rise, Filters To Be Provided

If you have lead water pipes, Thunder Bay city officials want you to use drinking water filters they’ll be giving out.

It’s because they’re no longer adding a chemical to the water to reduce lead levels, after that substance cause more pinholes to develop in pipes.

They started adding sodium hydroxide as a pilot project in 2016, then city-wide in 2018.

City officials say they will give more information and a free filter to anyone with lead service pipes in the coming weeks.

As well you are being asked to flush your pipes regularly by methods like running the cold water taps.

The city will be working with the province to find another way to cut down on lead corrosion.
