Council Seeks Ways To Deter Crime

Thunder Bay’s Crime Prevention Council is aware of the task ahead of it in dealing with the crime rate.

Organizers say they know there is a perception in Thunder Bay more needs to be done to fight guns and gangs, in spite of the many drugs busts made by police in recent weeks. Tuesday night, a public community meeting brainstormed ways to make Thunder Bay safer, as well as discuss reasons why people are drawn to commit crime. About 80 people showed up at the Italian Cultural Centre, along with some city councillors and the mayor, the meetings a requirement of the provincial government in dealing with crime. Methods discussed included finding more affordable housing for people, as well as reaching young people and keeping them included and active.

The Council also admits once people are charged with an offence, or convicted, the punishment doesn’t suit the crime. A way to address that is pressure levels of government for change.

Organizers add they’re aware many people feel criminals are not dealt with justly. Too many are released from custody too soon, and police are frustrated with that.

The council says reaching vulnerable people is a very complex issue which will involve many groups.
