Fire Sends One Person To Hospital

One person has been sent to the hospital after an early morning fire at Bertrand Court.

Platoon Chief John Kaplanis said when they arrived at the row housing complex it was full of smoke and one apartment unit was engulfed in flames.

“Inside of that apartment unit, the fire was contained to that apartment. Firefighters did say the apartment was completely ablaze, so that’s a really significant heavy fire, a lot of heat and smoke,” Kaplanis explained.

The Platoon Chief adds, “firefighters on the scene ushered a number of people out, and this was one of the occupants that had been evacuated at that time, we can’t say whether the person sent to the hospital was the tenant involved with the actual apartment that was on fire.”

Winnie Love lives in the housing complex and tells us their alarms went off at 3 am.

“We went and knocked on doors too,” said the resident. She goes on to say they will be staying at the Prince Arthur hotel for a couple of days and they are just waiting for the Red Cross.

The North Court Street housing unit is currently being investigated and fire officials are holding the scene.
