Massive Snow Storm Covers Newfoundland

More troops are heading to Canada’s east coast to help dig out of a massive winter storm.

About 200 recently arrived.

A state of emergency was declared in some areas of Newfoundland, where 75cms of snow was left in Friday’s storm over the weekend. There are still a number of power outages, with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary adding municipalities are working hard to remove snow to allow emergency services through, and are asking motorists and pedestrians to stay off the roads.

A message from Newfoundland’s Municipal Affairs and Environment office says first responders have reported that they are being hindered by residents operating snowmobiles on roadways. The City of St. John’s says all available city plows & resources are opening up roads.

Government Offices in St. John’s will stay closed as the cleanup continues, though the city reports that gas stations are now allowed to open for the purposes of fuel for snow clearing, while pharmacies can open from noon until 7pm for emergency medication needs.
