A group of cycling advocates is devastated city council has decided to scrap the Vickers-Carrick cycling bridge from the 2020 budget.
Spokesperson Ken Shields tells us as disappointed as they are, they will be bringing other ideas to city staff and aren’t giving up hope. He says they want to see if they “can come up with some other options to finally get the north-south link for cycling activated” in the city.
The cycling enthusiast tells us there are other bridge designs that should be less intrusive over the McIntyre Floodway and could cost the city less than the proposed $2.4 million.
Shields adds, the city declared a climate emergency on Monday but then turned around and scrapped an environmental transportation project.
Council approved the bridge in principal in July of 2019. The cost of the project went up in December.
