Indoor Turf Among Year’s High Points: Mayor

Thunder Bay’s Mayor Bill Mauro is highlighting what stood out in 2019 for him.

The Mayor feels embarking on the $30-million indoor turf facility at Chapples Park is an important council initiative.

“Obviously I’m excited by the multi-use turf [facility]. [With] 6,000 potential users, it’ll be a great facility– should we get over the final hurdle or two–that will serve the community for 40 or 50 years.”

The project got started in 2018 and in October City Council approved $1.5 million for Stantec Architecture to ready the project.

2020 is also this Council’s second full year in office, and the Mayor says they dealt with a learning curve in 2019. Mauro says it took some time to learn to work together but feels they did a good job with their first budget.

“I think there’s still work that has to be done there, obviously. The program and service review and the other two reviews we’re doing speak to Council’s efforts to try and find some efficiencies, and keep the tax rate as affordable as possible.”

The 2020 proposed budget will be made public on January 3rd.
