Thunder Bay’s Port has had repeat visits from US Coast Guard’s icebreaking tugs.
Port Authority CEO Tim Heney said the ice breakers will be back doing work on and off in December.
“The US Icebreakers have been in and out of port a couple of times already. They’ll be back again this weekend and then stay here until the [CCGS Samuel Risley] shows up and then they’ll finish up the [shipping] season here in Thunder Bay.”
The Port Authority CEO adds they’ve had quite a bit of ice build-up on area rivers, “the Mission river there’s probably 12 inches of ice now. You build quite a bit of ice on calm water and when it’s minus 20 you are probably building 3 or 4 inches a night, so we’ve had quite a bit of ice already. Hopefully, it warms up as it is forecasted to do for the end of the season.”
The shipping season in Thunder Bay’s Port isn’t expected to wrap up until mid-January.
