Safest Way to Fall

One of our family members biffed it HARD on the ice in a driveway yesterday. He slipped while helping carry our bags to the car so he didn’t even have a chance to break his fall, fell flat on his back and smashed his head. It was rough! It was terrible to witness, especially since he was just being a gentleman and helping us out! He’s sore but doesn’t think he has any serious injuries (thank goodness!) It got me thinking … If you are going down, what’s the best way to fall to avoid hurting yourself? After a quick Google, I found these tips from professional stunt performer Femi Olagoke:

Bend Those Knees

If you sense that you’re going down, bend your knees. Try to get as low as possible to lessen the height you’re falling from to reduce the impact.

Twist to Your Side

If possible, try to fall on the side of your body, and avoid leaning back and putting your hands out to break your fall, because you might break your wrist.

Tuck Your Head

Probably the most important part, tuck your chin to avoid smashing your head! It’s the same thing pro wrestlers do when they flat-back on the mat!

Check out the video below to watch Femi put these tips into practice, and you can click here for more from Mr. Olagoke. Good luck out there! There’s not much time between slipping and hitting the ground, but hopefully enough for you to Bend, Twist, and Tuck!
