Teachers’ Unions Able To Legally Strike

A legal strike notice has been granted to the unions representing Ontario teachers, assistant teachers and support staff for the end of this month.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation and Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario were given what’s called a “no board” report by the Ministry of Labour yesterday, after the latest round of contract discussions with the government continued to fail.

The union states it doesn’t mean they’ll strike, as discussions continue with the government over class sizes, and the number of teachers.

The ETFO says on its’ website it’ll be able to strike November 25th.

Education minister Stephen Lecce pointed out his disappointment in the development, noting the government wants kids to stay in class, while the ETFO President Sam Hammond said the union is fighting for investments, not cuts, but the education minister isn’t listening.
