The Fraser Institute says electricity prices continue to rise in Ontario despite government’s best effort to keep them down.
It finds Ontario residents are paying 22% more on average for hydro than the rest of Canada.
Elmira Aliakbari is the author of the report and says the provincial surcharge, known as the Global Adjustment, is identified as one of the main culprits.
“There is a particularly compelling case in regard to solar generators. Subsidies to these generators account for 15% of the surcharge, yet these sources only generate 3% of Ontario’s energy.”
She also points out what the Ford Government has cancelled.
“They have cancelled some future contracts, but they haven’t really cancelled existing contracts. And those contracts are the major driver of the surcharge accounting for 34% of it.”
The report’s author adds large electricity consumers in Ontario are paying 65% more than large consumers in the rest of Canada.
