Hajdu Focuses On Harbour Pollution

We could know this time next year how the toxic mercury-contaminated sediment at the mouth of the Current River will be cleaned up.

Thunder Bay Liberal MP Patty Hajdu says a research group will ask residents what option is the preferred choice to deal with.

“This is a really important piece of work for Lake Superior, but also for our region. I think that’s going to be a very big focus of mine as we move forward, I’m looking forward to hearing what the community and the consultation select.”

Environment Canada has been consulting with the public for years on solutions, although experts admit there is no easy answer for what has been considered one of Canada’s pollution hotspots.

“The research group has come up with a couple new options, and is going forward to consult with the community in the fall or early winter of 2020,” she notes.

Hajdu says she will make sure that once the new Minister of Environment is named, options will be presented on ways to deal with the 400,000 cubic metres of sludge.

“And then that’s my job as the Member of Parliament, is to push on the government to support the funding to do this cleanup.”
