When I was a kid, Star Wars was everything. I saw the original (which was eventually renamed A New Hope) at least 7 times the year it was released and when The Empire Strikes Back came out I managed to convince my parents that I could handle the double feature. I think they probably just wanted me to shut up and get out of the house, but that’s another story! There are several episodes of ‘That 70’s Show’ where characters are going overboard with their Star Wars love and annoying everyone around them. That was me. I’ve never been a big collector, or the fan that had to own everything put out or know every detail about Star Wars, but A New Hope is hands down my favourite movie of all time and I’ve shared this love with my oldest son. Not only has he ‘run’ with it, he’s surpassed my knowledge and love by leaps and bounds. When The Force Awakens came out in 2015 he was roughly the same age I was when Star Wars debuted and I was giddy with anticipation taking him to see the movie at the theater. Our first attempt was a bust (it was WAY too loud for him) but our second attempt was a big success and we’ve been to the theater together to see all of the Star Wars releases since. This Christmas the final installment of the ‘Skywalker’ movies is coming out, finishing the 9 movie arc that started with the release of Star Wars in 1977. I am giddy with anticipation about taking him to see this one. Not just because it’s going to be such a great movie, but because we will be able to share this piece of history together. For Star Wars geeks like my son and I, this is the end of an era, it’s the end of a story we’ve loved almost our entire lives. I’m not afraid to admit that watching this, the final trailer before the movie comes out, had me sobbing audibly in the booth. I’m so excited, I can barely contain myself!
