The President of the Chamber of Commerce is surprised City Councillor Brian Hamilton has been found in conflict of interest when voting on the designated truck route by-law.
Charla Robinson says it raises some questions on how the new conflict of interest rules will be applied in the future.
“It seems to be that almost every person sitting around the council table will at some point have an issue that seems to be normal council duty, but there could be concern over am I in conflict, or not in conflict?”
Councillor Trevor Giertuga made a complaint to the city’s Integrity Commissioner, claiming Councillor Hamilton’s flip on the issue was because the Chamber of Commerce told Council the Truck Route would hurt businesses including Hamilton’s coffee shop.
Robinson notes it will be interesting to watch how the new rules play out in the future, saying it could limit which councillors will be allowed to participate in these types of financial conversations at City Hall.
