LU Researcher Thankful For Provincial Funding

Lakehead University’s Canada Research Chair in Industrial Research is getting half a million dollars to purchase a new high tech piece of equipment.

Dr. Pedram Fatehi tells us he’s using the $515,535 in provincial funds to purchase a new Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer.

He explains the machine “studies the bonds between the chemicals and provides the structure of the chemical.”

Fatehi suggests his research will use the machine in the mining and forest industries.

His research project will be looking at replacing oil-based chemicals.

The machine will be at Lakehead University by January 2020.

Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines Greg Rickford says this research is important for many of the region’s sectors including biomass energy production and the mining industry.

He adds research is the precursor to future industrial developments and expansion in the northwest.

The machine cost Lakehead University $1.5 million with the federal government providing money towards the project as well.
