Orange Shirt Day Commemorated

Many people are expected to show their support of residential school survivors and their families with Orange Shirt Day.

The Nishnawbe Aski Nation is holding a residential school awareness walk this afternoon from 11:00 until 2:00.

The walk will start at Paterson Park and will end at Pope John Paul II, the site of the former St. Joseph’s residential school.

A sacred fire and teepee were put up at the site and kept over the weekend.

Officials say it’s a step forward in the reconciliation process and to honour those that did not return from the schools.

Meanwhile, Lakehead University commemorated the residential school experience by holding a special ceremony at their school with Indigenous elders.
