Local HIV Outbreak Ongoing

Thunder Bay’s Health Unit continues to work on addressing an HIV outbreak in our community’s under-housed population.

Medical Officer of Health Janet DeMille tells us there were 11 cases by the end of June and have since added another over the summer.

“To manage an HIV outbreak like this really needs a strategic approach to it so we are looking at a number of the different elements to be involved, looking at prevention, education, testing and treatment.”

The Medical Officer of Health is also trying to get the homeless population treatment for their HIV diagnosis.

DeMille adds it may take some time before they can declare the outbreak over.
