One of the city’s largest stately manors is now 100 years old.
The James Murphy residence on the city’s south side on Selkirk Street South has reached the special status and Heritage Committee Chair Andrew Cotter says the building is very unique.
The Murphy house and grounds span the entirety of a city block, are “a sprawling reminder of the heady days of Edwardian commercial wealth.”
The house is a three and a half story “monolithic tribute in brick and stone,” and the wealth belonged to James Murphy, who first arrived in Fort William in 1884.
Murphy was one of Thunder Bay’s early founders and served as the Mayor of Fort William in 1907.
