The sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter debuted this week in 1975.
The show starred comedian Gabe Kaplan as Mr. Kotter, a school teacher with a class of “sweathogs” of which he used to be one.
Many of the characters were based on Kaplan’s stand-up and the show was on the air for 4 seasons. The show also featured John Travolta and was a stepping stone to a big movie career on Saturday Night Fever and Grease.
The theme song was written by John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful and went to number one in 1976.
