62-Year-Old Woman Identified In Bear Attack

OPP say the 62-year-old woman who died after an encounter with a bear on a remote island on Rainy Lake is from Minnesota.

Catherine Sweatt-Mueller of Maple Plains, Minnesota passed away on Red Pine Island on Sunday, she had not returned from checking on her dogs.

Sweatt-Mueller was located in close vicinity to a bear and was found dead by officers.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is currently determining the next steps in the investigation and will seek OPP assistance if required.

The bear that was near the woman’s body was killed by police.
