Picky Picky Picky

My kids are picky eaters! It’s getting better with the oldest the last year or so, and my youngest is actually getting better as well. The middle son? Not so much. In fact, he’s trying to move himself to becoming vegetarian. Except he hates almost all vegetables. Oh, and fruit. Sigh. I respect his decision to try and become vegetarian (he is a HUGE animal lover after all) because he hates the texture of meat. Sliced lunch meat, hot dogs, ground beef…it all grosses him out. He did have a good run with chicken nuggets for a while, but that has changed as well sadly. This weekend he tried a legume based burger patty for the first time, but he didn’t dig it at all. To be honest, I wasn’t crazy about the texture either! So we’re going to be doing some experiments in the next little while (read: spending a LOT of money on food he likely won’t eat) trying to find things he can handle ethically and palate wise. I’ve never been too worried about him, because his older brother went through a phase of only eating cheerios and blueberries (still favourites) and a long string of stealing the zucchini off of my pizza (that doesn’t happen any longer). My youngest still TRIES everything but he’d try living off of candy and yogurt drinks if we let him. Today’s new experiment was french fries and peanut butter. He recently started eating sandwiches of lunch meat (doesn’t matter what kind), ketchup and shredded Parmesan cheese! That likely won’t last long. With my middle son though, it’s becoming a bit of a concern. Particularly after reading about a kid in the UK who is going blind due to complications from malnutrition…apparently all he would eat was french fries, Pringles and white bread! Now, I’m pretty sure that a multivitamin once a day would have fixed that (sorry parents, that one is on you), my kids get a multivitamin every day to make sure that these things don’t happen. I’d like my kids diet to consist of a little bit more than french fries, cheese, apples and carrots. Any parents of picky eaters out there have any tips for getting a kid with texture issues to eat healthier?

Let me know in the comments! (that’s a stock photo by the way, not one of my kids!)
