Woman Dead After Bear ‘Encounter’

A 62-year-old woman is dead after an ‘encounter’ with a black bear on Red Pine Island on Rainy Lake.

Provincial Police received a call around 6:30 Sunday evening from a woman who believed her daughter was attacked by a bear.

The victim had gone to check on her dogs and had not returned.

Officers arrived and found the body in close vicinity to a bear.

OPP will only say the animal was “dispatched” by officers and there were two other bears at the scene that were a threat to officers during their investigation.

Police say the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is currently determining its next steps.

The incident took place on a secluded island and there was no other risk to public safety.
