Dorian Won’t Impact Thunder Bay

Good news from Environment Canada in that Ontario isn’t expected to feel any impact from Hurricane Dorian.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says the storm is moving very slowly just north of the Bahamas.

“Only at about 2kms an hour. It’s not expected to make landfall on the Florida coast, or the Georgia or Carolina coast, but we are still expecting impacts from it right along the Florida coast.”

The Environment Canada meteorologist adds Dorian started as a Category 5 storm, has dropped to a Category 3, but could go back to 5 as it may meet with warmer water off the coast of the US in the coming days.

And, he says the hurricane could cause some problems for Canada’s east coast, but that remains to be seen.

As for Thunder Bay weather for the last month, August was a bit drier than normal.

He notes only about 64mm of rain fell at the airport.

“The long term average is 89mm, and in fact, about 1/3 of our rainfall for the month fell on one day, 20.6mm falling on August 29th.”

And, there wasn’t much of a difference compared to past years for temperature, with Coulson noting we were consistent with the rest of the province.

“Came in with an average temperature of 16.2 degrees celsius, and the long term average is 16.6.”

The meteorologist is also looking ahead to the rest of September, observing it’ll be a bit cooler for the beginning, and wetter.

“Also a little bit more unsettled for this first week of September, where we’ve got a fair amount of rain showers in the forecast over the coming days, we will see a bit of sunshine here and there.”
