Labour Code To Give More To Workers

Changes are coming to Canada’s Labour Code for people who work in federally regulated careers.

Labour Minister Patty Hajdu tells us those working in the media, telecommunications, banking or airports will see these improvements.

“3 paid leave days for example, so that people don’t have to choose between staying home with a sick child or losing a day of pay. Also, also a rest period after 5 hours of work of 30 minutes.”

The local MP adds some people working in these jobs don’t work under collective agreements.

“We’ve moved to update those laws to protect the most vulnerable in federally regulated workplaces and ensure that they have a healthy work-life balance and safe workplaces like every other employee across the country.”

The changes, starting Sunday, include leave due to family violence.

The Thunder Bay MP says the adjustments are needed since the Code hasn’t been changed since the mid-60’s.

“They could lose their jobs if they were not able to actually perform work overtime. Again, these are basic protections that help work-life balance.”

The Labour Minister adds the changes are the right thing to do, even though most employers understand the need to protect workers’ health and safety.
