More Blue-Green Algae Reported

Another case of blue-green algae is being reported in our region, this time it’s at the northwest side of lower Shebandowan Lake.

Officials are testing the water to see if the algae are toxic and it could take a couple of days before results are available.

Thunder Bay’s Health Unit reminds you to avoid water that has the algae present and notes it could take two weeks before it dissipates.

When blue-green algae are present in water, it is important to avoid drinking the water, using it for household purposes, or swimming in it. Keep pets away from the water as well, as their smaller size and propensity for drinking lake water makes them more vulnerable.

Blue-green algae are microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams.

Earlier this week a case of blue-green algae was reported in Hawkeye Lake.
