FWFN Setting Up Volunteer Fire Service

The Fort William First Nation will be looking to start up its own volunteer fire service.

Chief Peter Collins tells us they have begun the first phase by hiring a person who graduated from the Confederation College training program,

That person will be tasked with putting together a group of volunteers which Chief Collins says even lead to a first response team being put together as well.

It will also be up to that person to make sure those people chosen will be properly trained and certified as firefighters.

Collins explains it is necessary to have the department in place since the loss of the James Street bridge has caused problems for city firefighters getting to any fires in the First Nation community.

A plan will be presented to the band council in the next several months.
