Resolute Plans Fuel Debate

The NDP federal election candidate for Thunder Bay-Rainy River is weighing in on the restrictions placed on the future uses of the former Resolute Forest Products mill in Fort Frances.

Yuk-Sem Won feels the federal government should intervene.

Won also throws the blame on the Liberal government for failing to support northern Ontario, leaving people in the region to fight on their own.

The town of Fort Frances says conditions on the recent sale of the mill restrict any ability to restart the mill and access wood from the Crossroute Forest.

Meanwhile, the federal Liberal candidate in Thunder Bay-Rainy River takes the view similar to PC MPP Greg Rickford.

Marcus Powlowski believes Resolute Forest Products should be able to have restrictions on the sale of its Fort Frances property if it wishes.

Powlowski tells us “these restrictions are part of a business agreement between Resolute and a new buyer,”
and that “it may be news to the NDP” but not “every business deal is subject to government approval.”

Thunder Bay-Rainy River federal Conservative candidate Linda Rydholm has not returned our request for comment.
