Manslaughter & Assault Case Gets 18 Years

A judge has handed down his decision in the September 2017 south side death of Bert Isaac Wood.

The judge described the incident as an intoxicated rage and extremely violent.

Nazareth Alexander Nelson received 15 years for manslaughter and three years for two aggravated assault charges.

Nelson cried in court while his lawyer read a prepared statement from him.

He apologized to Wood’s family and friends, to his own family and to the emergency service personnel who saw the North Syndicate Avenue scene.

Nelson received pretrial custody credit towards his aggravated assault charges of over 1,000 days.

His sentence includes a lifetime weapons ban and a DNA order.
