Pikangikum Residents Evacuate Again

The province is helping evacuees from Pikangikum and Keewaywin First Nations who are fleeing forest fires.

Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says there’s an urgent need for communities to host evacuees, noting both First Nations have declared states of emergency.

She’s reached out to mayors in the region asking them to find space for evacuees.

There are 19 active fires in the region, including a 72,000-hectare fire eight kilometres south of Keewaywin, a 40,000-hectare blaze six kilometres to the southwest of Pikangikum, and a 23,000-hectare fire 40 kilometres north of Red Lake.

Sprinklers are being setup to help protect property.

In Pikangikum, the elderly, pregnant women, people with respiratory problems and their immediate families are being flown out to Kapuskasing and Hearst.

All Keewaywin residents have evacuated.
