After spending 30 years serving those with mental health and addictions in Port Arthur, a community group is moving to the south end.
Georgina McKinnon is the executive director of People Advocating for Change through Empowerment, and says their new location on Victoria Avenue East offers more than just greater space.
“Where we are now, we have a lot of the other services around us. We have Shelter House, LSPC is there, St. Joseph’s Care Group is down in that end. It basically puts us more in the hub of services.”
PACE’s executive director adds they started looking for a new place in April, and feels lucky to have found this place.
“It was move we think was pretty important to make, so that we could bring in more members. Our other location was very small, we could only have a limited number of people in there at one time, we were elbow to elbow.”
However, PACE’s Executive Director acknowledges not everyone is thrilled, namely those with addiction issues the group helps.
“So we’re going to try and help people out with getting down from the Port Arthur end down to our new location. A lot of our members don’t have transportation, so it upsets them a little bit.”
McKinnon adds it’ll be an adjustment after spending 30 years in the north end.
