College President Reflects On Budget, Enrollment

It’s been a good year for Confederation College.

President Kathleen Lynch tells us they are proud of the amount of students enrolled in their programs.

“We have almost 7,000 learners at the college, and this year we’ve set a record for full-time post-secondary learners, [at] almost 4,000 students. That is a real accomplishment for us.”

Another highlight for the school this year has been the grand opening of their brand new TEC Hub that houses engineering, manufacturing and trades students.

They are also trying to raise money to buy equipment for the TEC Hub.

Lynch tells us they need to raise $2 million for the initiative that will see cutting edge equipment for students in engineering, manufacturing and trades.

She notes they’ve already been working with “major donors.”

“Now we’re opening up the opportunity to the public to support the TEC Hub. I think people who’ve seen the TEC Hub can be very impressed by the facilities,” Lynch explains.

Meanwhile, the college is is taking a wait and see approach to planning their budget.

Lynch tells us they are keeping a close eye on provincial government decisions on post-secondary funding.

“We’re waiting, as others are, to feel some of the impact of the changes the government is making. We have new targets that we’re going to be meeting, so right now there are a lot of unknowns and we’re negotiating that over the summer with the government.”

The college has already made changes to help ease the impact of the provincial government’s reduction to tuition fees.
