Legal Aid Warns Of Funding Cut Consequences

Thunder Bay’s Kinna-Aweya Legal Clinic is letting their clients know how recent government cuts will impact their lives.

Spokesperson Angie Lynch tells us the province has decided to axe a child benefit for those families on welfare who do not receive the Ontario and Canada child benefits.

“That is a benefit that is provided to families while they are waiting for their Child Tax Benefit to be approved through the federal government. Often what happens is the feds will cut that benefit very quickly without warning and so the Transition Child Benefit would come in to help people while that was happening.”

The removal of the Transition Child Benefit will take effect on November 1st.

Lynch adds Kinna-Aweya helps appeal those benefits.

A town hall rally was held today at the Finlandia Hall on Bay Street to discuss the provincial government’s funding cut to Legal Aid Ontario.
