A structural fire in the 300 block of Empire Avenue has claimed the life of a pet cat.
Around noon, city firefighters were called to the basement fire in the home between Sprague and Tarbutt Streets.
They arrived to find smoke coming from the house.
They say that fortunately they quickly knocked down the fire and most of the damage was contained to one room in the basement.
Two people were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
One other cat and two dogs in the home were not hurt.
