A new school and residence could be in the works for Dennis Franklin Cromarty School.
Officials say they’re working on a study of how difficult the project would be, and that federal Indigenous Services Minister Seamus O’Regan also recently pledged to support the new school.
The study is expected to be finished in a month.
Sean Spenrath says it’s in the early stages, but they are hopeful the project could allow them to take on more students.
“I think with a new school and a living centre, communities might feel more safe sending their kids here to Thunder Bay. So, that population could increase quite a bit. I would hope for upwards of 300 [students].”
Spenrath says they believe the project could cost around $40-million, but can’t say for sure.
The Wake the Giant project connected to the school also got a $10,000 grant from the Chamber of Commerce.
That’s going towards a music festival for this fall’s student orientation, and says they’re relieved to have the money.
