The Trudeau government is set to pass a new comprehensive accessibility law.
Thunder Bay lawyer, and disabled advocate, Dave Shannon was part of a team which help come up with the new legislation.
He says he is very excited about its passage but admits, “now the real work begins.”
The new law will create an accessibility commissioner who will act as a watchdog to make sure all government departments will meet the standards of the legislation.
It will also see the creation of a new crown corporation, The Canadian Standards Development Organization, which will have a board of directors and a CEO who will advise the government on “regulatory changes” to improve the standards of accessibility.
Shannon believes the new law will bring our country into the 21st century when it comes to upholding the rights of the disabled.
