An unconventional start to this morning’s Police Services Board meeting with the Chair suggesting the Mayor tread carefully when he makes public speeches.
Her statement comes after Mayor Bill Mauro held a town hall meeting where he discussed the effects of two reports on racism in the Thunder Bay police force.
Celina Reitberger tells us she doesn’t agree with Mauro’s comments from that meeting.
During his town hall meeting last week the mayor said it drives him “insane” listening to the negative talk about the city across the country.
Reitberger indicates she did receive feedback “from Indigenous people who were not happy with it.”
She suggests the mayor should think before he speaks.
Reitberger felt the mayor’s comments were the elephant in the room.
The police board chair has asked the mayor in the future to identify if he is speaking as a police board member or as the mayor.
In reacting to the Reitberger’s comments, the mayor told our newsroom, “she has to explain herself, not me.”
